“A brother connects me to Hon. Fuseini, a person I’ve never met and never known. I go meet him at his office. He asks what I am here for. I explain that I’ve got a PhD admission with assistantship at Texas A&M University. He says will $*** be enough for a cushion? I say yes and he takes out and hands over the $***. I try to thank the man and he says, “go and come back and help our people. That is all I want from you.” Dumbfounded, I try to, but can’t, say anything noteworthy” he narrated.

There are people you meet only once in your life and they change your perspective on life forever. One of such people is Hon. Inusah Fuseini.

For two plus months in the summer of 2014, I survived in Texas on the benevolence of Hon. Inusah Fuseini. You see, when you go for graduate studies on a graduate assistantship, your assistantship stipends will not kick in until at least a month after you’ve started teaching or doing assistantship duties. And if you go early, you’ll probably have two or more months before you’re able to get your stipend. For those of us from underprivileged backgrounds, surviving these months of anomie in a foreign land can be very difficult.

That is exactly what happened to me in 2014 when I arrived in Texas in July.

Fortunately for me, I had a benefactor whose support cushioned me for those days of anomie. Putting a down payment/security deposit for apartment, buying food, transporting myself to class etc were all done in large part due to the generosity of Hon. Inusah Fuseini. I can never forget this generosity till the day I meet my maker.

And do you know how it happened? It was almost like a dream.

A brother connects me to Hon. That is all I want from you.” Dumbfounded, I try to, but can’t, say anything noteworthy. He steers the conversation to his favorite Shakespeare plays, mentions Hamlet and Julius Caesar. I am now on a strong footing. We have an excellent conversation and off I go to Texas…

Sometimes people ask me why I came back to Ghana. I always say that I came back to serve but deep down, I have always felt that I would be a fraud and would have defrauded people like Hon. Fuseini if I didn’t come back to at least give back some years of my life in service to mother Ghana. I am back partially because I owe people like Hon. Fuseini whose generosity afforded me the opportunity to achieve my dream of a PhD in English.

May Allah increase Hon. Fuseini in health and wealth and happiness for he is a man of integrity and a man who has the heart for service.
