Former President John Dramani Mahama late last week announced his intention contest as flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) ahead of the 2024 polls.
President John Dramani Mahama who is the favourite among three other contenders including Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a former Governor of the Bank of Ghana and Kojo Bonsu, is set to launch his campaign at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Sokode, Ho in the Volta Region.
A flier announcing the launch to be followed by tour reads “I invite you to either join me at the Cedi Auditorium at UHAS or watch a live stream of the launch on my Facebook page or Youtube channel from 9:00am”
Mr. Mahama who is starting the campaign internally with the thene “Building the Ghana we want together”, is expected to lashed out at the current administration over the current economic challenges and other unpopular decisions by the government.
Political pundits however explain that the decision to launch the campaign in the Volta Region is apt because it is the region that would aid in his victory at the party level and national elections.
They hold the view that the region regarded as the ‘World Bank’ of the NDC is also critical in cementing the victory of the NDC and therefore taking his campaign there means they can also be party to his concerns raised against the current administration.
Meanwhile, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, believes that with the extent of damage caused by the New Patriotic Party(NPP) government led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, it will take an experienced individual to repair.
She is of the belief that John Dramani Mahama who was President of Ghana until 2017 has garnered the needed experience in and out of office to stand up to this task.
With his experience as President and as a common citizen of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama is the only one whose leadership can salvage Ghana.
