Prisoners in the Kumasi Central Prison have been captured in a video using substances suspected to be cocaine and marijuana with no regard for authorities that may be monitoring them.
In the video, some prisoners are seen sharing the banned narcotic products and using them freely while chatting most relaxed, indicating that the practice is likely a normal part of their routine.
It is uncertain how the illegal product got into the prison’s inner perimeter and the prisoners’ hands. But sources indicate that getting unlawful products, especially narcotics and other psychedelic products, into the prisons is often done with the connivance of corrupt prison officers.
The issue of substance abuse in prisons is a longstanding canker in Ghana’s prisons, with ex-convicts revealing how accessing drugs in prisons is easy.
A worried senior police officer bemoaned the development and said “Police will suffer saaaa and arrest people for narcotics. They are sent to prisons for correction. Just look at the results… This is Kumasi central prison”
