N/R: 1 killed, others injured… in renewed chieftaincy dispute

One person has been killed and others injured in renewed chieftaincy dispute at Yong-Dakpemyili, a suburb of Tamale, in the Northern Regional capital.

Three houses have also been burnt down, and many residents fled for their safety, amidst gunshots in the community for two continuous days.

The exchange of gunfire was between two factions, all claiming legitimacy to the Dakpemyili skin.

This has been as a result of a long-standing chieftaincy dispute between two blood brothers in Yong-Dakpemyili.

The Ghanaian Times gathered that the shooting that lasted for two days, was as results of enskinment of the elderly brother, N-yab Chimsi, as chief of the community, by Tamale Dakpema, Bawa Fuseini, after a new skin was created by the Yong-Dakpemyili community.

The Assembly Member for the community, Abdul Wahab Dawuda, who confirmed the incident, said the shooting erupted because of the dispute and fighting between the two brothers over one title (skin).

He explained that one faction was expected to perform some traditional rituals but skirmishes ensued resulting to gunshots in the area.

“We are currently calling on the security agencies to come to aid of the vulnerable people in the community,” Mr Dawuda stated.

He lamented that residents of the area were suffering because of the actions of the two brothers.

Mr Dawuda said Yong-Dakpemyili needed peace, adding that, “the community have just started some expanding infrastructure development and now see what is happening in the area.”

He therefore, appealed to the chiefs and kingmakers of the Dagbon Traditional Council to help resolve the disputes once and for all.

Northern Regional Police Command has deplored personnel to the area, but the police refused to comment on the issue.
