The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 stormed the Parliament of Ghana to interact and share his vision with the party’s law makers.
His move was in an attempt to woo the NDC MPs to support his candidature for the chairmanship position of the umbrella family.
Having toured the length and breadth of the country campaigning vigorously for the votes of the party’s delegates, his engagement with the NDC lawmakers was, perhaps, key among his strategies in rounding up his campaign.
General Mosquito, as he is affectionately called in political circles, will come face-to-face with the incumbent Chairman and Leader of the party, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, who is seeking for re-election, when delegates of the party converge at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, December 17, 2022 for their Annual Delegates Congress. It is to elect new Executives who will man the affairs of the party for the next four years.
Also contesting for the Chairmanship position is the former Korle Klottey MP and Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Armah Ashitey.
The Chronicle can authoritatively report that there is sharp division among the now 136 NDC MPs, with majority of the number said to be against the candidature of General Mosquito.
These MPs, The Chronicle is reliably informed, would have loved General Mosquito to have sought for re-election as General Secretary of the party, instead of contesting Chairman Ofosu Ampofo, aka Bro. Sammy Foto, for the chairmanship position of the party.
They are of the firm belief that the move by General Mosquito has the tendency of disintegrating the party, since Bro Sammy Foto, in their view, has done a marvellous job over the last four years as Chairman and Leader of the NDC.
Some of the NDC MPs, who were closely monitored after Wednesday’s sitting were heard promising to vote against General Mosquito.
“What is it that he [General Mosquito] wants to do that he can’t do with the General Secretary position? We need him and Ofosu Ampofo to work for the party,” one of the NDC lawmakers noted in his conversation with his colleague MPs.
Those who are in support of General Mosquito, on the other hand, believe that the outgoing General Secretary of the NDC is their surest bet for victory as far as the 2024 general elections are concerned.
They see General Mosquito as someone who connects very well with the base of the party and could energise and mobilise millions of NDC supporters to win the 2024 general elections.
