The incumbent Member of Parliament(MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan has run to the streets following the declaration of interest in the seat by actor and politician John Dumelo.
Madam Alhassan who retained her seat in 2020 after polling 39,851 out of 77,604 total votes has been inactive until John Dumelo declared his bid last week.
Mr. Dumelo was her closest contender in 2020 as he polled 37,778 while an independent candidate got 108 votes with 595 rejected ballots.
Madam Alhassan quickly organized a Keep Fit Walk to re-energize her base.
The sitting MP replaced her late husband Emmanuel Boakye Agyarko in January 2019 when she contested and won the parliamentary seat for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election.
She won the by-election with 68.80% of the valid votes cast while the other candidates, Kwasi Delali Brempong of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) polled 30.52%, William Kofi Dowokpor of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Clement Boadi of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) polled 0.58 and 0.10 percent respectively.
John Dumelo has been mounting pressure on the incumbent since her victory in 2020.
He accused the MP has of failing to tackle the incessant robberies that happens on the GIMPA-Legon road. He also accused the MP of not doing enough to stop flooding in the constituency.
In a post on social media, Dumelo said the MP has stopped caring because there’s no impending elections.
