All you need to know: Pelé funeral & burial arrangements

On Monday and Tuesday, the legendary Brazilian soccer player Pelé’s funeral will be held in the same stadium where he played some of his best games.

The public will be allowed to pay their ultimate respects at Vila Belmiro Stadium, outside of Sao Paulo, according to Santos, the Brazilian team where Pelé played.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, passed away on Thursday after a protracted battle with cancer. He was 82.

Santos stated that the three-time World Cup champion’s casket would depart Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital early on Monday and be positioned on the field’s center circle.

Monday’s visitation will begin at 10 a.m. and end the following day at precisely the same time.

Pelé’s coffin will be brought through the Santos streets and stop in front of his mother Celeste’s house, who is 100 years old. According to recent claims in Brazilian media, Pelé’s mother is unconscious and unable to leave her bed.

A vertical cemetery in Santos called the Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica will serve as the site of the interment. Only family will attend.

Having spent the majority of his life there, Pelé has a home there. He spent his last years in the city of Guarujá.

In September 2021, Pelé had a colon tumor removed. Whether disease had spread to other organs has not been disclosed by either his family or the hospital. On Nov. 29, he visited the Albert Einstein medical center once more, this time with COVID-19 and a respiratory infection.

His cancer had advanced, the hospital declared in a statement last week.

Pelé, who still ranks among the team’s all-time greatest goal scorers with 77 goals, guided Brazil to World Cup victories in 1958, 1962, and 1970. During the World Cup in Qatar this year, Neymar tied Pelé’s record.
